Feasibility Study for a Solid Waste Management Project in Kafr El Sheikh Governorate, Egypt

Within the Egyptian-German development co-operation, the German Government is supporting the Egyptian strategy of exploring and implementing options to enhance private sector participation in the solid waste. The Consortium IGIP-IU-Rodeco-Aldar has been assigned to elaborate a feasibility study regarding this issue for the Governorates of Kafr El-Sheikh.

The objective of the study is “Improvement of the health, environmental and economic conditions in the project area through the establishment of a safe, cost-efficient and sustainable solid waste management system”.

Of particular importance for the study is the scarcity of land for disposal in the Governorate since the Delta is densely populated and mostly used for agriculture. For this reason and because of the waste composition in the region (90% organic compound) composting and mechanical biological pre-treatment are important strategies to reduce the waste volume.

Other important issues are the strengthening of the institutional capacities and the cost recovery schemes.
