Concept Development, Project Implementation, Tendering and Training
Within the German-Turkish Cooperation Project “Solid Waste Management Project Samsun” the consortium IGIP – IU – TEMPO has been commissioned to elaborate a study on different options of HCW treatment and disposal for the project region.
A new Regulation on Healthcare Waste Control came in to force, defining new treatment and disposal options. There-fore the study in the different treatment and disposal technologies have been discussed and compared. Due to the local requirements technologies; sterilisation, incineration and direct landfilling were analyzed in detail.
Four scenarios have been developed:
- Treatment in each hospital of the Samsun region
- A treatment plant for the Samsung region
- A treatment plant in cooperation with the Erzurum and the Trabzon/Rize region and
- A treatment plant for the entire North-east Anatolia.
As a result of this study the recommended solution is the realisation of a central treatment plant for the project area of Samsun. The plant should be operated at the sanitary landfill where the residues will also be disposed. A daily collection in small pick-ups would be adequate for the estimated quantities.
In 2006, the staff of the municipality and the hospitals in the city was trained and the treatment plant and the construction works were tendered.
