Municipal Solid Waste Management Tangier / Northern Region, Morocco

In January 2007 the Consortium IU-IGIP-SEGU with Infrastuktur & Umwelt as the lead consultant was commissioned with implementing the project “Improvement of Municipal Solid Waste Management, Tangier / Northern Region”. The project is financed by GTZ and the project partner is Tangier Municipality. The Project in one of four components of the Environmental Programm Morocco, which is supported by the German development cooperation.

 

Tangier is a rapidly expanding city with growing importance as a centre for trade and industry. Linked to this development waste management issues in recent years became a major concern. Main focus of the project is the improvement of the waste disposal situation, including the improvement of operational pratices on the landfill and the elaboration of technical measures like leachate management. Other aspects include the monitoring of the private sector performance, training and capacity building.

Results

  • Improved landfill operation and considerably reduced landfill emissions
  • Inter-municipal cooperations for waste disposal in the region
  • Agreed procedures for monitoring SWM services of private contractors
  • Establishment of environmental training and information centres
