Decentralisation of Solid Waste Management, Yemen

The German Ministry for Economic Development and Co-operation (BMZ) supports Yemeni Authorities since September 1995 with a technical assistance project with the aim to improve solid waste management in Yemen.  The German contribution is provided through GTZ and the project is implemented by the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Urban Planning (now Ministry of Public Works and Highways - MPWH). Its main focus is to support the Republic of Yemen with regard to the decentralisation of solid waste management to local authorities including training of personnel and the development of regulations and guidelines in the solid waste sector.

Infrastruktur & Umwelt was commissioned by GTZ to implement the German contribution to phase II of the project (starting in 11/2000). In April 2004 the project was extended for 3 more years (Phase III) and in November 2006 for another 2 years until December 2008.

Results

  • Decentralisation of solid waste management to local authorities,
  • Development of regulations and guidelines in the solid waste sector.
