Announcement of public consultation on draft flood risk management plans in Baden-Württemberg

Following a decision by the government of Baden-Württemberg, the Federal State’s draft flood risk management plans will be made available for viewing by the public between 22 December 2014 and 22 June 2015.

On 9 December 2014, the Cabinet decided that the draft plans for flood risk management in Baden-Württemberg should be made available to the public. They will now be available for viewing along with the Water Framework Directive management plans from 22 December 2014 until 22 June 2015. Members of the public and interested authorities as well as neighbouring German Federal States and adjacent countries thus have an opportunity to respond to the plans.

INFRASTRUKTUR & UMWELT (IU) has been involved in the implementation of the Flood Risk Management Directive in Baden-Württemberg since 2009. In cooperation with relevant stakeholder groups, an approach was agreed upon that encompasses the various aspects of flood risk management, ranging from keeping open spaces free from development within the context of regional or urban planning to technical flood prevention, public safety during flooding and dealing with the aftermath of floods.

The preparation for the work involved putting together a catalogue of measures for the whole of Baden-Württemberg and previously agreed working methods such as questionnaires, information material and an internet-based map viewer. IU provided technical support during the preparation process and was responsible for quality assurance throughout the Federal State.

Between 2010 and 2014, risks were discussed and action agreed upon with local stakeholders in 22 project areas. This ensured that the stakeholders were closely involved in the process. IU was responsible for carrying out this work under the overall direction of the regional councils in Freiburg, Karlsruhe, Stuttgart and Tübingen in nine project areas, namely Upper / Middle / Lower Neckar, Starzel, Schussen, Argen, Dreisam and Kinzig-Schutter / Acher-Rench.

In 2015, IU will continue to assist in the completion of the flood risk management plans and will be actively involved in the preparation of monitoring work and further activity.
