International City Regions Conference in Albrechtsberg Palace, Dresden

On 24 September 2014, under commission from the Saxony State Ministry of the Interior, INFRASTRUKTUR & UMWELT organised the closing conference of the CENTRAL EUROPE City Regions Project on the theme “The Positioning of City Regions within European Strategies” in Albrechtsberg Palace, Dresden. The event was moderated by Dr Jürgen Neumüller and offered more than 100 participants from Germany, Poland, Austria, Italy and Croatia the opportunity to discuss the possibilities of better cooperation between cities and their hinterlands.

Particular attention was given to fresh perspectives resulting from new EU funding instruments such as “Integrated Territorial Investments” (ITI) and “Community-Led Local Development” (CLLD) introduced as part of the 2014-2020 funding period.

Władysław Piskorz from the European Commission Directorate-General for Regional and Urban Policy discussed the further development of urban-rural partnerships and the EU Urban Agenda. Project partners from Halle/Leipzig, Wrocław, Prague, Graz and Turin also provided an insight into the results of their local pilot projects.

Andreu Ulied from the MCRIT research institute in Barcelona and Henning Finck from the Elbe-Oder Union of Chambers of Industry and Commerce began with presentations about economic integration and scenarios and visions for territorial development in Europe until 2050, which led to further discussion regarding cooperation in the macroregional context. It became clear that in Central Europe in particular there is a great interest in cross-border strategies, which help to bridge the divide between West and East. Much has already been achieved on this front, but there are still great challenges ahead – in relation to accessibility, for example, or cooperation in the field of energy politics.
